Description:
This Finnish-language unit, for 12-15 year-olds at a community language school, builds food and cooking vocabulary alongside grammar (imperative and passive verb forms, partitive endings across singular and plural categories) and cultural knowledge (traditional Finnish foods, the Finnish school meal system compared with Australia, and formal versus casual café/restaurant language). Students demonstrate their learning by teaching adult learners at Sydney Finnish School, running a hands-on session at the Finnish Chamber of Commerce where they teach the adults to make two traditional pastries. Students also prepare a written piece for the adults to read, about a favourite Finnish recipe, covering what they like and dislike about it, what was easy or difficult to make, and when and where in Finland or Australia they've tasted it.

Description:
This book began when a group of students discovered there were no Swahili storybooks in their local libraries and decided to write one themselves. They brainstormed ideas, wrote the story in both Swahili and English, and illustrated the characters in colour. To make the story authentic, they visited Oakvale Farm and the Hunter Valley Zoo, observing and sketching African animals. The finished book is a true collaboration, written and illustrated by young learners who proudly share a piece of African culture with their Australian community. The project strengthened their Swahili skills and gave them a lasting sense of pride. They hope it will be the first in a series that inspires readers to explore nature, celebrate diverse cultures and languages, and embrace learning.

This resource contains Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) yearly scope and sequences, 8 unit (term) plans, lessons plans and teaching resources for beginner Urdu students. It is adapted from the NSW Modern Languages K–10 Syllabus and funded through the NSW Community Languages Schools Program. It sets out four units for each year. Year 3 covers self and friends, healthy food, celebrations, and homes and environment. Year 4 covers home, family relationships, animals and habitats, and transport. Each unit links to syllabus outcomes in interacting, understanding and creating texts, and includes an assessment task. Teachers can adapt the tasks to their classes.
